Super Summer Suppers-image

Summertime is fast approaching here in East Amherst, NY, and that means summer foods too — the lighter fare of salads, sandwiches, wraps, fruits, and food cooked on the grill. While we have lovely kitchens with their granite countertops and stainless steel appliances in our Autumn Creek Apartments, it is nice to be able to put a meal on the table without spending too much time in the kitchen. So, we’ve come up with some summer supper menus that will get a meal on the table quickly. Take a summer favorite, the bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, and turn it into BLT Chopped Salad . With the addition of avocado, this flavorful entree is sure to please. Add dinner rolls and some kind of fruit, and you have a meal. Soup is usually associated with warming up in the wintertime, but this Gazpacho Soup , served cold, will help you cool down on a warm summer day. Served with tortilla chips, it is deceptively filling—and good for you, too! Take it outside to the grills with this delicious Lemon Grilled Trout entree. Ready in just thirty minutes, you’ll be eating in no time. Serve with a green salad or a pasta salad to complete the meal. Salads are a summertime favorite. Serve several different ones and call it dinner. Or add one to a one-dish entree to finish the meal. We like the variety of salads found on the Cutestuff Cooks blog. Chips and salsa are often served as an appetizer, but they can also be part of an at-home meal. Add fajitas or quesadillas and dinner is served. We like this salsa-turned-salad recipe that could be served instead of salsa and chips: Tomato/Avocado/Cucumber Salad. 1 avocado cut into small chunks 1 cucumber peeled and cut into chunks 1 basket cherry tomatoes 1 bunch of green onions minced Mix together and let chill. Just before serving, add a garnish of chopped cilantro and 4-8 oz of a hard cheese, cubed. What is your favorite summertime meal? Do you have tips for keeping cool in the summertime? We’d love to hear your ideas. Please leave a comment below!

Playground Etiquette at Autumn Creek Apartments-image

Among the amenities members of our apartment community will find here at Autumn Creek Apartments are several play options for kids — a Kids Activity Zone and a Toddler/Children’s Playground. It may be that you use it them regularly to take the kids or grandkids to play, or perhaps you’ve driven by it many times but have never stopped to check it out. Or maybe you didn’t even know we have playgrounds. Whatever your take, today’s post is about playground etiquette. Being aware of playground etiquette will improve our community, making living here a better experience for everyone. Taking Turns is Polite We know little Jamie loves to swing, and swing . . . and swing. But if Chris, Jason, and Katie are forming a line, waiting for the swing, that’s a good sign Jamie needs to give someone else a turn. Stay aware of what is happening with others at the playground and don’t monopolize a playground feature. Give your child a couple of minutes warning that they need to play on something else soon, and use the situation as an opportunity to teach the child about sharing. Keep an Eye On Your Children This should go without saying. No matter how well-behaved the child, they can still get up to quite a bit of mischief when they want to. Put away the cell phone or tablet and engage with your child. Be aware and watch what is happening. It’s helpful for safety and for getting along with others. Be Prepared Being prepared at the playground can prevent an early departure. Put together a playground kit to take with you. Include tissues, wet-wipes, band-aids, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a plastic bag. With these items on hand, you will be prepared to deal with the little emergencies that often happen at the playground. For example: scraped knee? A quick wipe down, a band-aid, and a kiss will get a child back to the slide in no-time. East Amherst is a great place to live, and Autumn Creek Apartments are a part of that. Bring your kids out to enjoy the playground! Keep these tips in mind and help everyone have an enjoyable outing.

Celebrating Jazz in East Amherst-image

Today the Autumn Creek Blog is excited to be writing about Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), which is this month. Learn about the history and ways you can celebrate the month in today’s blog. One of the reasons April was chosen as JAM is because it’s the birth month of many of the great jazz musicians, including Ella Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith, Johnny Dodds, Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, Gerry Mulligan, Shorty Rogers, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, and Duke Ellington. Miles Davis, speaking of Duke Ellington said, “At least one day out of the year all musicians should just put their instruments down, and give thanks to Duke Ellington.”   We invite members of our apartment community at Autumn Creek Apartments to take some time this month to get out (or stay in) and appreciate some smooth jazz. To help you out, we’ve put together some ideas about how to celebrate JAM : — Follow your favorite musicians or groups on social media. — Seek out new jazz music, musicians, and albums. — Read a biography about one of your favorite jazz musicians, a book of jazz poetry, or other jazz book, fiction or nonfiction. — Watch a jazz documentary, film, or performance. New York has a long tradition of being home to some of the best jazz in history. Yelp has some suggestions for jazz venues in the East Amherst, NY area you may want to check out. Jazz Buffalo is also a great resource for finding out about the jazz scene in the area. In association with Pausa Art House, they will be hosting a free event for International Jazz Day, April 30th, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Here’s some additional information from the calendar event announcement: So far, The Hot Club of Buffalo, the Buffalo Brass Machine, and My Cousin Tone’ will be performing.  International model and singer Carmina Suzanne will also be singing a song or two in French/Italian to add to the international flavor of the event.  Look for one or two more groups performing.  Donations will be accepted with proceeds going to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, in which the annual MS Walk is on the following Saturday, May 6.   You can also take an extra excuse to get your passport ready: you can catch a double feature of Justin Kauflin and Alfredo Rodríguez, who are billed as “internationally-acclaimed jazz pianists,” at Bravo Niagara on May 6th at the Stratus Vineyards. We hope you enjoy some jazz this month. Thanks for reading today’s post!
